WHERE THIEVES BREAK THROUGH AND STEAL
“Lay not up for yourselves
treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break
through and steal” Matthew 6:19 (KJV).
In recent days we have witnessed one of the greatest thefts of personal and corporate wealth in the history of the world. And the tragic reality is that it is far from over because the reverberations will not be silenced by the band-aid “bail out” package Congress has applied to the gaping hole in our economy! Staunching the flow of blood from a severely wounded public trust will likely take years to heal and in the meantime all of us will feel the pain.
People are wringing their hands, worrying about how they are going to be able to cope with loss of jobs and rising prices as their retirement funds have been decimated by stock market losses. The Great American Dream that so many have been greedily pursuing for the last several years with a “buy now and pay later mentality” has suddenly become a nightmare.
But if you are a truly born again child of God there are resources available to you in the midst of this growing economic disaster that the world does not have!
“Do not fret or have any anxiety
about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer
and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your
wants known to God. 7 And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil
state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing
from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that
peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount
guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7 (Amplified Bible, emphasis mine).
And then there is this observation made by King David, the “sweet
psalmist of
“I have been young and now am old, yet have I
not seen the [uncompromisingly] righteous forsaken or their seed begging bread”
Psalms 37:25 (Amplified Bible).
God always takes care of His people and no matter how bad things may get,
He gives sufficient grace to meet the need of the hour. And we see that
principle at work in what the Apostle Paul had to say about a crisis in his own
life. He was suffering from some sort of debilitating illness and asked the Lord
three times to heal him:
“But He said to me, My grace (My favor and
loving-kindness and mercy) is enough for you [sufficient against any danger and
enables you to bear the trouble manfully]; for My strength and
power are made perfect (fulfilled and completed) and show themselves most
effective in [your] weakness. Therefore, I will all the more gladly glory
in my weaknesses and infirmities, that the strength and power
of Christ (the Messiah) may rest (yes, may pitch a tent over and dwell) upon
me!” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (Amplified
Bible).
But what all of us need to learn is that there is a tremendous difference between our wants and our needs! We have God’s promise that He will meet the latter, but nowhere in the New Testament is there anything stating that He will guarantee the former (Conditional promises of material blessing based upon obedience were made to the Old Testament Jew, but not to New Testament believers):
“And
my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need
according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:19 (Amplified
Bible, emphasis mine).
Because of the ridiculous and unscriptural teaching called “The Prosperity Gospel” that many have embraced in recent years, God may allow His people to go through some really tough times to teach us all a lesson! So be advised that our basic needs consist of food, clothing and shelter and the relative degree we possess of each of them over and above what is required for survival is due to God’s grace—not from any obligation on His part to provide them.
“Then
He told them a parable, saying, The land of a rich man was fertile and
yielded plentifully. 17 And he considered and debated
within himself, What shall I do? I have no place [in which] to gather together
my harvest. 18 And he said, I will do this: I will pull down my
storehouses and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain or
produce and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you
have many good things laid up, [enough] for many years. Take your ease; eat,
drink, and enjoy yourself merrily. 20 But God said to him,
You fool! This very night they [the messengers of God] will demand your soul of
you; and all the things that you have prepared, whose will they be? 21 So
it is with the one who continues to lay up and hoard possessions for
himself and is not rich [in his relation] to God [this is how he fares]” Luke
12:16-21 (Amplified Bible).
And if we as a people do not
turn to Him in repentance and seek the salvation that only He can provide,
sooner or later we will cross His “line in the sand” and suffer divine
judgment. Every major civilization from the dawn of time until now has made
that fatal mistake so what possible reason could we have to think that our
nation will be any different?
Are you mentally and spiritually prepared for whatever may be in store for us? Do you thank God daily for His blessings and pray that He will provide grace to cope with the possibility of greatly diminished circumstances? If not, I urge you to take stock of your life and get ready!
The present world-wide economic
crisis is enabling governments to buy a controlling interest in their
respective economies and thereby become Fascist in the way they do business.
Private enterprise will be allowed, but as a majority shareholder the
government will “call the shots” by dictating how much is produced and the
price for which it will sell. This has been the case with
We know this will ultimately be the case because the Book of Revelation (13:17) tells us the antichrist will be able to control who can “buy or sell.” For a single individual to exercise that much power over the peoples of the world it is obvious that it will have to be wielded through a central government. So what we are seeing take place today is setting the stage for tomorrow. And I believe that in the not-too-distant future that world government will rapidly become a reality after God removes His Church from the Earth.
But before that blessed event
takes place it is entirely possible believers may have to deal with extreme
persecution. When the Church was born at Pentecost the Jewish religious
authorities unleashed a firestorm of persecution and it is entirely possible
that when the Church is removed at the Rapture it will be snatched out of the
same kind of conflagration. Why do I believe that? We are given a clue in the
following passage:
“For the mystery of lawlessness (that hidden principle of rebellion against constituted authority) is already at work in the world, [but it is] restrained only until he who restrains is taken out of the way” 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (Amplified Bible, emphasis mine).
In my opinion the Holy Spirit
is clearly the “he” who restrains the evil one by exerting His influence in and
through genuine believers. And we
need to understand that the majority of the people in this world do not like it
one bit! So when the time is right and God intentionally allows His
restraining influence to wane (and I believe it is already happening), some
polarizing event could easily trigger public sentiment to turn on us with a
vengeance! While a lot of things are within the realm of possibility, consider
this one:
The world-wide outpouring of support for Senator Obama in his bid for the White House continues to be intriguing. The degree of infatuation with him is truly unprecedented and his effect upon people borders upon the supernatural. Grown women have swooned during his political rallies and hardened reporters continue to gush with superlatives.
Therefore, it is of particular interest to our discussion that contrary to the practice of some candidates over the past several elections he has not engaged in a “full-court press” to woo Christian conservatives. In fact, his campaign has all but ignored us.
So what if he is elected with a sizeable margin of victory and euphoria sets in as it did after John Kennedy was elected? Is it inconceivable that a tremendous eruption of outrage against believers might take place if, God forbid, some loony-tune nut claiming to be a Christian assassinated him? Stranger things have happened and we need to be aware that where public opinion is concerned our position is becoming more and more precarious.
In the meantime all of us are going to have to deal with the economic realities of life and things are probably going to get much worse before they get any better. Like it or not, our society has danced and now we must pay the piper. Unbridled greed on the part of an unsuspecting public whipped into a frenzy by banksters bent upon mischief has once again resulted in a transfer of wealth that is unimaginable. The stock market crash of 1929 appears to have been a “trial run,” for the biggie we are now experiencing. And if history is any indicator of things to come—another world war is waiting in the wings to rear its bloodthirsty head.
Folks, things do not look good
for the home team—but we still serve a sovereign God and Romans 8:28 is still
in the Book:
“We are assured and know that [God
being a partner in their labor] all things
work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and
for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and
purpose” Romans 8:28 (Amplified Bible,
emphasis mine).
So if you have been neglecting the blessed privilege of talking things over with your Maker, I strongly suggest that you rectify that oversight immediately—if not sooner!
If you have been born again and received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, but have been very lukewarm in your spiritual walk with Him, you need to immediately ask Him for forgiveness and for renewal. He will instantly forgive you, and fill your heart with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Then, you need to begin a daily walk of prayer and personal Bible Study.
