Is Egypt's current Civil War fulfilling the End of the Age prophecy against Egypt found in Isaiah 19:1-3?
Listen carefully to God's prophetic proclamation against Egypt:
" And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and they will fight, every one against his brother and every one against his neighbor, city against city..."
In accord with this prophecy, Egypt seems hurtling helplessly toward Civil War! One of God's End Times judgments against Egypt portrays Egyptians fighting Egyptians in what certainly sounds like a prophecy of national destruction through civil war.
NEWS BRIEF: "Egypt at Risk of Civil War", The National Interest, August 2, 2013
"The overthrow of Mohamed Morsi on July 3 prompted much concern that Egypt stands on the brink of civil war. Watching events unfold from Cairo over the past months, though, it has been clear to me—and many of my Egyptian friends and colleagues—that the country has been slowly sliding towards war for months. Events since Morsi’s downfall suggest that the early stages of a civil war may already be here."
Indeed, as I have created our Daily News Updates section, I have been struck repeatedly with the notion that the Egyptian Army may not be able to firmly put down the Muslim Brotherhood, but may be only able to incite a full-blown internal war with them, i.e., a Civil War. Jewish journalists believe this scenario is already set in motion, and one of them boldly stated that one of G-d's final judgments against Egypt was a civil war so destructive that it tore apart the entire nation.
This Jewish journalist quoted Isaiah 19:1-3, so let us review this prophecy right now.
"The mournful, inspired prediction, a burden to be lifted up concerning Egypt: Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at His presence, and the hearts of the Egyptians will melt within them. And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and they will fight, every one against his brother and every one against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of the Egyptians within them will become exhausted and emptied out and will fail, and I will destroy their counsel and confound their plans..." (Isaiah 19:1-3; Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Bible Commentary)
Let us examine this prophecy in detail.
1) Whenever God begins a chapter in the Bible with the words, "mournful, inspired prediction, a burden to be lifted up", you know that the prophetic details following are End of the Age judgments.
For example, in Isaiah 17:1, we read of the End of the Age judgment prophecy against Damascus, the "longest continually occupied city in world history". God begins this chapter by saying "The mournful, inspired prediction, a burden to be lifted up, concerning Damascus .... Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city and will become a heap of ruins."
Therefore, we know that God is about to pronounce a significant End Times judgment against Egypt.
2) "And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and they will fight, every one against his brother and every one against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of the Egyptians within them will become exhausted and emptied out and will fail, and I will destroy their counsel and confound their plans ... " (Ibid.)
God's judgment against Egypt at the End of the Age is that He will stoke the flames of civil war. Egyptian shall fight Egyptian, brother against brother, city against city and kingdom against kingdom. As we have seen through the protracted Syrian civil war, a nasty internal war can produce a devastation so complete that the nation's ability to contribute and to cooperate with other nations on the regional level is almost totally destroyed. Photographs coming from Syria today show a degree of building and infrastructure devastation that belies the imagination; likewise, Egypt is already suffering economically. She cannot feed herself these days and she has been forced to accept huge Arab loans from sheiks in the region who do not want to see the radical Muslim Brotherhood take over the country.
Egypt today is poised for a full-scale civil war. On the one side is the Egyptian Army, who wants to keep Egypt on a "progressive", more Western path, but on the other side is the radically militant Muslim Brotherhood. Their vision for Egypt is to subject all Egyptians to the radical Shari Law. All Arabs who lean toward Western values hate and fear Sharia Law.
We watch with fascination at the civil war now unfolding in Egypt. What makes this civil war so interesting is that, from a human perspective, very few saw this internal war coming. After the Western World screamed for the need for "fair and honest elections" throughout the Middle East, a radical follower of the Muslim Brotherhood -- Mohamed Morsi -- emerged from a "fair and honest" election as the winner of the office of President.
While Egyptian generals complained and wrung their hands, they seemed helpless to step in militarily to overthrow a democratically elected President. But, Morsi proved to be marginally competent and this failure opened the door for the Egyptian Army to step in. When the generals overthrew this elected President, they immediately stated that they would hold another free and fair election within months.
Morsi followers poured on to the streets by the millions. Ant-Morsi forces also poured on to the streets by the millions.
A frustrated Egyptian Army killed scores of Morsi supporters, thus plunging the entire country into a chaos, out of which civil war can easily erupt. Egypt's streets are today pulsating with "Egyptians against Egyptians", in "city after city", and with hearts melting over the entire situation.
Egypt may, indeed, be entering her prophesied judgment of civil war. If they are, then this development is a "sign" that the entire world is sliding into her prophesied judgments of "wars, rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, and kingdom against kingdom .... famines and earthquakes in place after place." (Matthew 24:6-7)
As this civil war progresses, will we see the radical Muslim Brotherhood gain power once again? Right now, the civil war is raging between the Egyptian Army and the most radical Muslim Brotherhood. For the moment, the Army seems to have the upper hand, and they are imprisoning President Morsi, the top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. However, as the prophecy against Egypt continues, the wording is such that it seems possible that the militant Brotherhood might gain supremacy.
"And I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a hard and cruel master, and a fierce king will rule over them, says the Lord, the Lord of hosts." (Verse 4)
I can see the Muslim Brotherhood fulfilling the wording of this prophecy -- "... hard and cruel master, and a fierce king ..."
Therefore, the abrupt emergence of a civil war within Egypt seems to be setting the stage for fulfillment of Isaiah 19:1-3.
However, the most exciting fulfillment of End Times prophecy for Egypt is boldly stated in verses five through seventeen. Let us systematically turn our attention to these verses, for current events are uncannily -- uniquely -- setting the stage for fulfillment of the 2,500 year-old prophecy. God foretold:
"And the waters shall fail from the Nile, and the river shall be wasted and become dry. And the rivers shall become foul, the streams and canals of Egypt shall be diminished and dried up, the reeds and the rushes shall wither and rot away. The meadows by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all the sown fields of the Nile shall become dry, be blown away, and be no more. The fishermen will lament, and all who cast a hook into the Nile will mourn; and they who spread nets upon the waters will languish ... Those who are the pillars and foundations of Egypt will be crushed, and all those who work for hire or who build dams will be grieved." (Isaiah 19:5-10; Ibid.)
Notice that God mentions those people "who build dams". Is it possible the mighty Nile River might be dried up through dams? With this question in mind, let us review current events that speak of Ethiopia building at least one dam and perhaps three, at the headwaters of the Nile River! You will discover that drying up the Nile is not as preposterous as you might think.
Listen to what these dams will do to Egypt once they are in place.
NEWS BRIEF: "Ethiopia’s catastrophic dam", by Nader Noureddin, Professor of Agricultural Resources at Cairo University, Al-Ahram News, July 31, 2013
"The latest map -- left -- dated 13 July 2013, showing the three Ethiopian dams that will be built from the Renaissance Dam and their hydroelectric potential. Egypt has no substantial precipitation, of only about 15mm per year, and as a result the 1.3 billion cubic metres we use of rain water, along with the six billion cubic metre per year of underground water, constitute only a fraction of our needs. The bulk of Egypt’s needs for water come from the Nile, which provides 55.5 billion cubic metre of water per year."
Egypt, and her mighty Nile River, figure prominently in Old Testament writings. The Egyptians were polytheistic, worshipping many gods, one of whom was the Nile River. The Nile's headwaters are in Ethiopia, the "river runs 6,650 miles long and its waters are shared by eleven countries: Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea." (Wikipedia)
Few rivers in the world are as important to life and prosperity in the region as is the Nile. Therefore, it is highly newsworthy when any one nation decides to build dams and store billions of cubic feet of water, especially since these 11 nations exist in the middle of very dry, to desert conditions.
Keep in mind that this prophecy clearly states that dams are going to play a role in this destruction of Egypt.
"... this situation may change radically if Ethiopia goes ahead with its project to create a major dam, or series of dams, in an area close to the Sudanese border. The Nile water that Egypt relies on comes from two sources. The first, and most important, is the Ethiopian Plateau, which supplies the country with nearly 85 per cent of its needs. Some 65 per cent of these come from the Blue Nile, and the remaining 20 per cent comes from the Atbarah River. The second source is the Great Lakes region of Africa, which provides about 15 per cent of Egypt’s needs."
Egypt has historically claimed the right to use the Nile River as much as she wants to, without any interference from any of the other nations. But, in 2010, this situation turned nasty, and probably will remain so until God's prophecy runs it course and is fulfilled to the letter.
"As Egypt, in which the demand for water is rising, contemplated its options, the upstream countries took further steps. On 14 May 2010, six of the upstream countries signed the Entebbe Agreement that cancelled the privileges Egypt had had in the past, including the right to scrutinize and approve water projects south of its borders ... From now on, water projects would be approved by the majority of the countries concerned, not by unanimous vote, as had been the case before. "
In other words, Egypt can now no longer exercise a veto on any water project. She can, and will, be outvoted.
When Ethiopia saw her opportunity to take advantage of Egypt, she pounced like a leopard.
"A few months after the Entebbe Agreement was signed, the 25 January Revolution erupted in Egypt, giving Ethiopia the chance to launch a major project on the Blue Nile without fearing Egyptian opposition."
Practical Facts About These Dams
"When Ethiopia’s Hidase Dam, also known as the Renaissance Dam, was planned, it was supposed to create a lake that would store 14 billion cubic metre of water, but then the lake’s capacity went up to 74 billion cubic metre. Acting without Egypt’s approval, Ethiopia laid the foundation stone for the dam in April 2012."
This storage capacity increase of the reservoir behind the dam is a whopping 428%! At this point, the storage capacity even threatens Egypt, as we shall see later.
"... reports in the UK, US, German, Swiss and Dutch press pointed out that the Renaissance Dam would be nothing short of catastrophic for Egypt ... This increase in size contrasted with Ethiopia’s declared goal of building the dam to supply the country with hydroelectric power. In hydroelectric dams, the lakes are usually less than 14 billion cubic metre in capacity. The massive capacity of the lake suggests that a power game is afoot. Whoever is in control of the dam will also control the Blue Nile. And whoever controls the Blue Nile, the old saying goes, will also control Egypt."
For several thousand years, Egypt has dominated the other countries within the region. But, now, her leaders are in danger of losing control of Egypt's daily life, especially if the water disappears.
"... the report has not been published in full, and the available parts indicate that the dam is not one structure, but a series of dams, something which the previous Egyptian government also refrained from divulging. There is a technical reason for the proliferation of dams. The first dam, which will be built at a distance of five kilometres from the borders of Sudan, is expected to receive all the silt coming from the plateau of around 240 million cubic metres per year. The silt will fill up the proposed lake within 50-70 years. Therefore, the company intends to build three other dams on the Blue Nile to reduce the silting of the final lake. Behind each dam, a lake will therefore emerge, leading the total amount of reserved water to be about 200 billion cubic metre, a quantity that spells death for both Egypt and Sudan."
That last sentence contains the essence of God's End Times prophecy against Egypt in Isaiah 19. Egypt is to be crushed.
"What If" These Dams Collapse?
Now that we realize that these dams will create unprecedented water diversion from Egypt and the Sudan, what kind of physical damage would occur if one or all three of these dams collapse -- or are blown up by military force?
"Another point of interest has to do with geology. The first dam is going to be built between two mountains that are supposed to offer it structural support by acting as 'shoulders' for it. However, geological research shows that the two mountains in question contain fragile rocks that cannot bear the structural pressure. So instead of the dam leaning on the mountains, the mountains lean on the dam."
The mountains are going to lean on the dam? That sounds incredibly dangerous, don't you think?
"And the dam leans forward on the turbine areas, which increases the risk of collapse. The chances of the Ethiopian dam collapsing as a result of this unusual design have been put at 95 per cent during the first 20 years of its life. American experts give the dam a security rating of 1.5, compared to the security rating of Egypt’s Aswan High Dam, which is eight. If the dam collapses, an unspeakable ecological disaster will hit both Sudan and Egypt."
Before we continue to read about the ecological disaster which a dam collapse could produce, let us examine again this Scriptural prophecy to see what kind of ecological destruction God intends to wreak upon Egypt, by showing again this pertinent prophecy.
When we return to read the prediction from this Cairo Professor as to what will happen if these dams collapse, or fall by military attack, it sounds like this prophecy!
"Working with colleagues in the hydraulics department at Cairo University, the present writer has run a simulation model to assess the damage that would happen in the event of the dam collapsing. According to this simulation, nearly 74 billion cubic metre of water would rush north, annihilating Khartoum completely with a tidal wave 9-18 metres high. All cities north of Khartoum, up to the Egyptian borders, would also cease to exist."
"When the water hits Lake Nasser at the Aswan High Dam, there are two possibilities. If the lake is low, the High Dam might not collapse. The lake would fill with the incoming water, the Toshka Reservoir would be filled, and the remaining water would flow over the High Dam. The flow of water, estimated at four times the average, or about one billion cubic metre per day, would lead to the collapse of all the other dams and bridges along the river, as well as most buildings on its banks."
"However, if Lake Nasser is full, the consequences will be more dire. The Aswan High Dam would be likely to collapse, and all of Egypt, up to the Delta perhaps, would be inundated."
"... once the dam is built, the Ethiopian lake will need to be filled first before any water comes through to Egypt and Sudan. Before the lake is filled, there is no way of diverting water downstream. What all this means is that Egypt may remain without water for at least two years until the lake is filled. If we add to this the fact that further dams will be built to slow down the silting of the northernmost dam, this time is multiplied."
Therefore, Egypt will be without the Nile River flow for at least two years and probably more. Remember, Egypt has so little rain, she absolutely depends upon the waters flowing daily down the Nile.
What did God foretell of the Nile River flowing through Egypt?
"... the waters shall fail from the Nile, and the river shall be wasted and become dry. " (Isaiah 19:5-9)
"To top it all, the dam is being built in the hottest part of Africa, where the evaporation rate is phenomenal. The area of the dam is equivalent to the Gulf States, and the evaporation will be many times larger than that taking place off Egypt’s Lake Nasser ... The Ethiopians claim that the evaporation rate in Ethiopia is only three per cent ... behind the dam itself, the evaporation rate will be 12-15 per cent, as compared to 10 per cent for Egypt’s Aswan High Dam. This means that nearly 10 billion cubic metre of water will be evaporated annually."
"The geological pressures caused by this shift in weight could lead to tremors and quakes, thus raising the possibility that the dam will collapse and flood both Sudan and Egypt. The water leakage may also weaken the body of the dam, for the great amounts of water that are likely to leak from the lake are going to move forward towards Sudan, passing underneath the rock formations bearing the dam and potentially weakening it to the point of collapse ... As a result, the pollution level in the Nile will increase, and the sea water from the Mediterranean will flow inland, raising the salinity in the land of the Delta. Several crops, such as rice and sugarcane that require plenty of water, will disappear from Egypt."
Once again, let us review God's prophecy.
"And the rivers shall become foul, the streams and canals of Egypt shall be diminished and dried up, the reeds and the rushes shall wither and rot away. The meadows by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all the sown fields of the Nile shall become dry, be blown away, and be no more."
We believe that current news events concerning Ethiopia's plan to build these four dams could produce a fulfillment of Isaiah 19. However, Egypt's destruction is not the end of this story. God turns after His judgment has run its course, He heals Egypt and even gives her a role to play in the coming 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ.
"In that day there will be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of [the Hebrews of] Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord of hosts ... In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border. And it will be a sign and a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of oppressors, and He will send them a savior, even a mighty one, and he will deliver them." (Isaiah 19:19-20; Ibid.)
After God's physical judgments run their course, some Egyptians will turn to " swear allegiance to the Lord of hosts" and they shall erect "an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border". God's response is one of great Mercy, for He "will send them a savior, even a mighty one, and he will deliver them."
Will the complete fulfillment of this prophecy run through the end of the Seven-Year Tribulation, through the time of Jesus' glorious return? I think this scenario is very plausible, because of God's promise to "send them a savior, even a mighty one". Jesus may be that "Mighty One" who delivers Egypt. As we return to this prophecy, note that God promises Egypt that she will be one of three nations who will form a "Messianic League", further solidifying the concept that this scenario, which is beginning now, will run through the seven years of Tribulation and to the time of Jesus' return.
"And the Lord shall smite Egypt, smiting and healing it; and they will return to the Lord, and He will listen to their entreaties and heal them. In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria; and the Egyptians will worship the Lord with the Assyrians. In that day Israel shall be the third, with Egypt and with Assyria [in a Messianic league], a blessing in the midst of the earth, Whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, Blessed be Egypt My people and Assyria the work of My hands and Israel My heritage."
I believe the final restoration and healing of Egypt to be a most inspiring story. Like Babylon, Egypt has been steeped in all forms of Witchcraft, to which God alludes in His earlier prophecy in Isaiah 19. But, after so thoroughly destroying the land, God has also cleansed the people of their dependence of mediums, soothsayers, and shamans.
God will give Egypt equal partnership with Israel and Assyria "in a Messianic league"! These three nations will become a "blessing in the midst of the earth".
Most of the time, God's judgments are designed to cleanse the nation under judgment, and provide the way for restoration. This is His promise to Egypt. I find it terribly exciting to see current events in Egypt and the Sudan and Ethiopia, suddenly turning toward this 2,500-year-old prophecy. It sounds like events are being arranged by God to fulfill every detail of this prophetic utterance.
I do not wish the death of any person, and am sorrowful that so many will evidently die as this judgment occurs. But, I am excited to see that the God whom I worship and serve is bringing glory to Himself by the fulfillment of this prophecy and many others in the next few years. Jesus told His believers at the End of the Age, "Now when these things begin to occur, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption (deliverance) is drawing near." (Luke 21:28)
The time is here for us believers to life up our heads and be encouraged that our Redeemer is drawing near!
Before we end this study, let us examine one more fact. God says that, as He is restoring and healing Egypt, He shall restore Assyria, giving her one-third equal partnership with Israel and Egypt in the Messianic Kingdom. Who is Assyria? It is not current Syria. In order for God to fulfill this portion of Isaiah 19, He will have to restore Assyria as a nation once again.
Where are the Assyrians now? Let us look at an ancient map first to see the extent of the original Assyrian Empire. Notice that Assyria controlled Israel, Egypt and Babylon (Iraq).
NEWS BRIEF: "Netherlands Requests Assyrian Autonomous State in Iraq", Assyria Times, 6/17/2008
"According to one of the main Iraqi newspapers, Al-Iraq, the government of Netherlands has requested the European Union, as well as the Iraqi government to help the indigenous Assyrian Christians of Iraq to establish their own autonomous state of Assyria in northern Iraq ... The request also included the suggestion of creating an Assyrian Christian militia to protect their independent state."
The Assyrians are Christian, not Islamic! Perhaps this is the reason God is going to restore them to their own country and give the new nation a one-third partnership in the Messianic Kingdom. Where are the Assyrian people living now?
NEWS BRIEF: "Who are the Assyrians?", Assyrian Voice
"Simply put, the modern-day Assyrians are Semitic people, and the direct descendants of the ancient Assyrian and Babylonian people, including their predecessors the Akkadians and Sumerians, and have a history spanning over 6760 years. Assyrians are considered the indigenous and native people of Iraq and are not to be confused with other ethnic groups in Iraq and the region, such as Arabs, Persians and Kurds. Unlike these groups, Assyrians are Christians and have their own language (Assyrian Neo-Aramaic)."
Therefore, we should expect that God will begin to move to reestablish Assyria as a nation. This new Assyria will not be as extensive as the old empire, because this prophetic passage (Isaiah 19) declares that Israel and Egypt will be one-third partners in the new Messianic Kingdom.
In these past few years, God has been busy setting the stage for fulfillment of His many End of the Age prophecies.
Not only is this prophecy concerning Egypt unfolding right now, but President Bush's war against Iraq fulfilled Isaiah 13 (Read full details in NEWS2171, entitled, "President Bush Has Nearly Completed Fulfillment of the End of the Age Isaiah 13 Prophecy Against Ancient Babylon (Iraq)")
And, of course, the prophecy foretelling the End of the Age annihilation of Damascus, capital of Syria, is simply waiting -- trembling -- for fulfillment (Isaiah 17:1)
More than ever before, we live in an era in which prophecies are being fulfilled. Are you paying attention? Are you spreading this good news to the unsaved within your "Sphere of Influence"?
