Global death toll form SARS reaches 106

MOSCOW. April 10 (Interfax) -The global death toll from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) has reached 106, the Russian Health Ministry's State Sanitary and Epidemiological Inspection Commission reported on Thursday, citing the World Health Organization. All in all, 2,722 SARS cases have been registered in the world.

In China, where the virus was first found, 2,269 cases have been registered; in the U.S. - 149, in Singapore - 118, in Canada - 94, in Vietnam - 62, in Thailand - 7, in Germany - 5, in Great Britain - 5, in France - 4, in Italy - 3, and one each in Romania, Malaysia, Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland.

Deaths from SARS have been registered in China (80), Canada (10), Singapore (9), Vietnam (4), Thailand (2), and Malaysia (1).

"No SARS cases were registered in the Russian Federation as of April 9," the State Sanitary Commission said.

Suspected SARS cases were registered in Novosibirsk (April 4), Vladivostok (April 4), Moscow (April 6 and 8), and the Republic of Mariy-El (April 8). A SARS diagnosis was not confirmed in any of those cases, Interfax was told. [RU EEU EUROPE ASIA EMRG HEA] av tl <>
