Palestinian terrorists tried to infiltrate the West Bank Jewish community of Itamar after nightfall Sunday, settlers said, and battled soldiers.

There were no casualties among the Israelis, said Bentsi Lieberman, head of the Settlers' Council. A statement by the settlers said that an Israeli force spotted Palestinians trying to infiltrate the settlement, and an exchange of fire was underway. Israel TV reported that one Palestinian was killed and soldiers were pursuing others.

Itamar is near the West Bank city of Nablus. Settlements in the area have been targets of Palestinian infiltrations several times in the last 29 months of fighting. Last June 20, an armed Palestinian killed five Israelis at the settlement.
