TITLE: CONTENTMENT IN CHRIST

Subtitle: "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16:26 (KJV)

If I had to select just one term that would best describe the world's masses today, it would probably be "discontented." But  the same word would have been just as appropriate thousands of years ago, because the nature of man has not improved. We came into this world kicking and screaming our heads off because of being suddenly deprived of the safety and warmth of our mother's womb and thrust into a strange environment against our will. And it all went downhill from there! We had to learn by trial and error what we could get away with and what would bring punishment--as we stubbornly insisted upon satisfying every personal desire. Conflict with siblings taught us the fine art of warfare and how to "get even" when things did not go our way. As we matured, our sophistication grew until we could still act like a child on the inside, but manage to hide it from others and thus avoid censure. Sorta like wanting to eat dessert first and realizing we had to eat the veggies to keep the peace.

We are such depraved creatures and selfish to the very core. Our basic instincts are geared to personal survival, personal comfort--and subsequently--propagation of the species. "If it feels good, do it," is the unofficial motto of mankind. "Do unto others before they do unto you," is the golden rule of Wall Street. "I'm gonna get mine," is written on the rip cord of C.E.O. "golden parachutes." As a result, I call this latest crop the "hooray for me and to heck with you generation."  Decorum and civility be hanged--being #1 top dog is of the utmost importance, because everyone else is a loser! In chasing the dream, the "have nots" are working themselves to death and so far in debt that Solomon himself could not untangle their lines of credit. Casinos increasingly rake in billions from suckers wanting something for nothing. Meanwhile, the rest of the world looks on with envy and hordes stand in line to get a shot at entering the rat race. And it is obvious that this frenetic mass of humanity has overlooked something! What could that be, you ask? Simply this--history repeats itself and without fail these periods of unrestrained debauchery have always ended with tragic results. And in case you have been away from mother earth for a while and out of touch with reality, all of the warning signs are flashing. The stock market is trying its best to belly-up and the smell of war hangs thickly in the air. Like blood in the water causes a feeding frenzy among sharks, the hatred of Islamic terrorist groups is feeding off of the decadence displayed by a Western dominated society. We are rapidly approaching critical mass and an explosion of thermonuclear proportions is inevitable.

Yet the Bible speaks of the "peace of God, which passeth all understanding" (Philippians 4:7). Are you experiencing that kind of peace today? As the subtitle of this article states:

"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Matthew 16:26, KJV)

What good will it do if you wind up #1, possess enormous wealth, and then lose your soul in the process? Does that seem like a good trade-off to you? I dare say that most  would not choose to spend all of eternity being tormented in the flames of hell for a few years of living in the lap of luxury. But unfortunately, some are just hard-headed enough to do it! Our advice is to:

"Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near" (Isaiah 55:6, KJV).

True contentment, with a peace of mind and heart the masses of the world can only yearn for, is available through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. When the inane and insane finally does reach its climax and the whole world turns upside down and inside out, inner peace will be the only thing of real value. You see, physical death has no sting (1 Cor.15:55) when one has eternal life. Satan's "signs and lying wonders" (2 Thess.2:9)--displayed during the rise of antichrist--will have no lasting effect upon those who truly know the Lord. Those without the protection of the Holy Spirit will be captivated and snared by them, never to recover.

Some mistakenly believe that the "Cutting Edge" web site tries to frighten people into accepting Jesus Christ--but I submit to you this is an impossibility. Spiritually dead individuals cannot even understand the principles involved (1 Cor.2:14), and will not seek Him on their own (Rom.3:11). They are already slaves of Satan (Eph.2:2) and totally helpless. Unless God intervenes and calls them to Himself, they are goners! What we are trying to do is act as a lighthouse by shining the light of God's eternal Word into the darkness of the world--for the benefit of those who will see it and respond to it. The Holy Spirit is at work and true spiritual illumination is happening to individuals around the world as evidenced by the many who are believing the message of God's redeeming grace. It is a supernatural message and only received by those whose spiritual eyes and ears are prepared for it. Are you among that number?
